It’s been said that nature abhors a vacuum. This is also true of the internet marketplace, where a strong demand for website traffic has sparked an entirely new breed of marketeers, all with a promise of “guaranteed traffic” in exchange for ‘X’ number of dollars. Can it really be so simple? Or are these promises really just a bunch of hype, or worse yet, an outright scam?

It helps to keep things in perspective. Think about the idea of guaranteed traffic in terms of the basic economic premises. For example, I recently saw a company offering 1 million targeted, unique visitors for just $795. Say I’m selling product ‘X’. One million targeted visitors for such a low price might seem reasonable if it weren’t for the fact that A) I am not the only one selling product ‘X’ and B) the company from which I purchased the 1 million visitors is not the only company selling targeted traffic. If there are just 100 other competitors selling product ‘X’ and 100 other companies selling targeted traffic then there must also be 10 billion page views and/or searches for product ‘X’ (i.e., 1 million searches/visitors x 100 competitors x 100 traffic generation companies). There aren’t even 10 billion people in the world, let alone 10 billion internet users!

No doubt there are legitimate companies out there. Finding them is another task. I have not used the following service personally but there are many people who seem to endorse it; it’s a site called traffictesters.com. Feel free to post comments about it should you decide to try it.

There are many different ways of generating traffic– interstitial ads, expired domain redirects, embedding entire websites in a host page etc.–but the most common method as far as I can tell is the use of pop-under ads. If you ask me, someone viewing an unrequested pop-under ad impression doesn’t really qualify as a “visitor”. To me, a visitor is a web user who comes to my website through his or her own volition.

In my opinion, effective SEO is hands down the best way to get traffic. If you’re not familiar with the concept of SEO then I’d suggest reading up on it. If you don’t feel confident in your ability to optimize your site, then I’d suggest hiring a legitimate SEO company.

No doubt, the raison d’être of any website is that it be seen by others. Whether for vanity, the sharing of knowledge or making money via some business venture, no website can realize its full potential without traffic. In the case of the internet marketer, whose livelihood depends on selling a particular product or service, getting website traffic is not merely a preference, it is an act of survival. Fail at this task and it’s time to start looking for a job—a frightening thought indeed!

Google’s AdSense program has quickly become the dominant model for selling ad space on the internet. With AdSense, a website owner simply copies and pastes small bits of code into the webpage where ads are to appear. Google then automatically analyzes your content to determine which ads are most relevant.

Where AdSense theory meets reality…
In theory, making money with AdSense is simple. But in reality, how much money you make comes down to how well your website is optimized. When someone performs a search using certain keywords Google scans all of its indexed web pages to determine which ones are most relevant. If your site has been properly optimized, it should appear somewhere in Google’s search results.

Making cents versus dollars with AdSense…
You can start making money right away if your content is relevant enough and your site has been properly optimized. How much money is a different matter. At first, you might start seeing daily amounts that range from just a few cents to a dollar so. Ultimately, the money you make from AdSense will be proportionate to the effort you put into writing really good and relevant content. Avoid trying to write about anything and everything under the sun. How the search engines come to see your site as relevant is when they detect a theme among all your web pages. For example, rather than start a site about skin care products, you might focus on only certain types of skin care products, like acne treatment or wrinkle prevention. Writing useful and relevant content is what will draw people to your site…and keep them at your site. The longer these visitors stay at your AdSense site, and the more pages they view, the more likely they are to click on one of your AdSense ads.

Obviously, you want to build a site around keywords that have a certain amount of popularity. But it’s also important that you possess an interest in your chosen subject matter. If you aren’t interested in what you’re writing about then it’s going to show, and your readers will quickly move on to another site. Read the article yourself as if you had just stumbled upon it. Read it out loud. Does it sound like something that would keep your interest? If so, you’re off to a good start.

There are many factors that go into making money with AdSense. I suggest reading “AdSense Tips” to learn more.

Anyone who’s ever placed an advertisement on Craigslist knows that online classified advertising can work. And Craigslist is just one among hundreds of free online classifieds websites that afford an opportunity to expose your product or service to a targeted audience. But not every product is well suited to this ad format. And indeed, a great deal of spam-type ads have begun to dilute these online classifieds platforms.

Things to consider for any online classifieds campaign:
• Not every product is well suited to the online classifieds. Your typical luxury car buyer, for
example, probably isn’t looking in the free online classifieds.
• How much competition is there for your product or service? Will your ad stand out from all the
white noise?
• How frequently will you ad run? Studies have shown it can take as many as 8 exposures to the
same message before a typical consumer responds.
• What is the likely demographic of shoppers who visit the particular site? Are they bargain
hunters? Dominantly men or women, young or old?
• A bad headline will kill you ad. Write a good one and half the battle is won. Test different
versions.
• Try to write good, sincere, compelling content. Avoid exaggerated claims while at the same
time creating a sense of enthusiasm.
• Include a call-to-action. If your reader fails to act, chances are they won’t be back.
• Tracking is an absolute must when advertising not only in different online classifieds
publications, but when testing variations on the same headline and ad copy. All it takes is that
one winning headline to spark a successful campaign

Consider paying for online classified advertising.
It’s been said you get what you pay for. While there are certainly many great free sites, there are probably even more bad ones. There’s a reason that companies like Yahoo! and MSN get away with charging as much as they do: they can! Exposing your product to tens or even hundreds of thousands of targeted shoppers can pay big dividends. But there is a certain amount of risk as well. Try starting small, keeping in mind the aforementioned tips. If at all possible, try to test your ad on one of the free sites before going live on a paid online classifieds site.

It might sound obvious, but the Cost-Per-Click (CPC) paid for any given keyword plays a huge role in determining the success of your pay-per-click campaign. Say you have just $200 per month to spend. Getting keywords at an average CPC of $0.20 is ten times more effective than if you had to pay $2.00 per click for the same keyword. (If you haven’t already, be sure to read “Pay-Per-Click Basics” to see how your quality score affects your CPC.)

So, where to start? This article assumes you’ve created an Ad Group and decided on certain keywords. Once logged into your AdWords account, access the particular Ad Group. Click on the “Keywords” tab at the top of the panel and then click “Edit Keywords”. You’ll see an “Estimate Search Traffic” button at the bottom of the screen. This is a great tool for forecasting the traffic you are likely to receive based on the amounts you’ve bid for various keywords.

So how to manage your monthly pay-per-click budget?
Really, it’s just a matter of what your can comfortably afford to put at risk. When it doubt, error toward the conservative. What you’re really trying to do at this point is test the effectiveness of your content, or sales pitch. The greater conversion rate, the more relevant your content, the lower your cost-per-click (CPC).

Here’s an example of how the math might look:
We’ll start with the following assumptions: 1) You’re selling a product that generates $30 revenue per sale, 2) You make 1 sale out of every 50 clicks (a 2% conversion rate) and 3) Your cost-per-click is $0.45. In this example, your total spent was $22.50 (i.e., 50 clicks x $0.45). You made $30 in revenue, and so you profited $7.50. Not bad. At this point, you’ve seen that you can make a profit. Maybe not as much as you’d like, maybe not as much as you’re capable of, but a profit nonetheless. Things to consider at this point would be tweaking your content to make it even more effective, and then scaling up your monthly pay-per-click budget.

But what it you lost money on the campaign? In this case, you need to do one or more of the following: 1) Raise your quality score to reduce your CPC and/or 2) Adjust your product pricing.

Running an AdSense site can be a profitable venture for those who know how to set things up right from the start. The time you’ll spend learning from your mistakes will be much greater than the time you’ll spend learning how to avoid them in the first place. You don’t have to be a technical guru to get good at designing AdSense sites but you do have to understand and implement a few very basic techniques.

So here is some AdSense Advice…
Write good, relevant content. Make sure your keywords appear throughout the page, but not too frequently. Never plagiarize: Google doesn’t like duplicate content will just put your webpage on a list of pages to ignore. Pay attention to where your AdSense ad blocks are positioned relative to your content. The consensus among AdSense experts is that a centrally located content, surrounded by ad blocks to the top and left work best. Locating them to the right is also not bad. But whatever you do, don’t over-populate your site with ads. You know the kind–you can’t tell whether there’s any content other than ads. Most of the time, I just hit the ‘back’ button. Remember: people are looking for relevant content, not ads! Give them what they want and more often you’ll get what you want–clicks. Some less obvious

AdSense suggestions…
Most AdSense wannabe’s rightly focus on writing good, relevant content. But something less obvious is the underlying html of the web page. There’s only one reason to put AdSense ads on your site, and that is to make money. You’re not going to make money with AdSense without traffic. And you’re not going to get traffic without a properly optimized web page. Make sure the title of your web page contains your main keyword or key phrase. Make sure your page’s meta description also makes use of your keywords. Pay attention to the anchor text of your links. Example: “Click to read more information on making money with AdSense” versus “For more information on making money with AdSense, click here”. The former contains our key phrase in the anchor text whereas the latter does not. Get the idea?

You were looking for AdSense tips and I’ve shared a few with you. And now I have another: keep things in perspective. We all want instant gratification and no one wants to wait for success. But the time you spend devoting yourself to learning your subject matter and becoming an effective writer is a downpayment on your future success. As the saying goes, take care of the little things and the big things will take care of themselves.
